The International Organization for Standardization(ISO) is an international standard setting body composed of representatives from national standards organizations of various countries. Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland on 23 February 1947 it promotes worldwide proprietary, industrial and commercial standards. It presently spans across 168 countries.

This is an independent, non-governmental organization, world’s largest developer of international standards and a great facilitator of world trade by way of promoting uniform standards across nations. It has set over twenty thousand standards covering everything from manufactured products and technology, to food safety, agriculture and healthcare.

Reason for Setting Standards

Setting standards is an important process since it ensures security, quality of sold goods and identifies parameters for almost every product which must be met by the manufacturers’. This has significant implications since it ensures that a company selling a high-quality product in a developed high-income state may not indulge in the unethical practice of selling products of sub-standard quality for cheaper rates in under developed nations. This does much for ensuring equality across nations and safeguarding rights of consumers everywhere.

In India, the Bureau of Indian Standards(BIS) does much the same task. The ceiling fans have been classified under two categories for standardization on the basis of wing span. One is 1200mm (48″) with the other being 1400 mm (56″). They have been further classified as per their usage ie industrial or home.

The lie by fan manufacturing company

These standards set up by BIS are ideally meant to be followed by ceiling fan manufacturers but since it is not mandatory most manufacturers do not abide by them. These standards usually put two parameters for classification- input power and service value.

Modern day ceiling fans employ cutting edge technology and design optimization processes in order to bring up the efficiency of their operation. The most amount of energy is consumed by motors and thus by employing brushless DC motors (BLDC) energy rating of ceiling fans is significantly improved. These fans have balance optimizations made which make them humming noise proof. Also, they have better compatibility at operating on low voltages.

ISO standardization gives one a sense of surety as to its safety and operation. Apart from this a BEE star rating is also mandatorily provided. These measures help the consumer in making a informed choice regarding the model of the appliance to be brought. Thus, it is imperative to choose brands which follow these standards in their manufacturing processes.

The concerned Indian standard for ceiling fans is IS 374:1979. Most of the manufacturers follow the guidelines set in this standardization document. Apart from the standardization principles one must also check up on the power rating and energy efficiency promised by manufacturer.

There has been a sea change in the technology employed in manufacturing these fans and one must be aware of the latest trends in vogue and subsequently make an informed choice. Minutiae must be identified as often the smallest and most trivial of factors are the most important in determining suitability of a product for usage in home as well as in work spaces. This site has certified energy efficient ceiling fans at cheap price.
