You are sitting in the kitchen one day enjoying a cup of coffee and reading the paper, you hear a dripping that you can’t seem to place. After taking some time to hunt the source down, you finally discover what the source of the leak is. You have a pipe that seems to have struck a leak. You can either call a plumber who will take their time to come out and address the issue or you can tackle the project yourself. You don’t always need to call a plumber if the leak is a minor one that can be handled with a few basic tools and a replacement piece.

After you have determined where the leak is, then you need to figure out the parts that will be needed to fix it. Most times a faucet or a drain pipe are the two most common easy to fix leaks that people will encounter. For this article, we are going to say an elbow pipe under the sink. So, you will need some basic tools that will help you to get the leak fixed. First make sure that you put a drain stopper in the drain to prevent any more water from dripping down the drain.

After you have done this, then you will need to make sure that you loosen the pipe at both ends to help and make sure that the pipe will come off easily. This will be a little bit of a difficult thing to accomplish as the pipe will be tightly put in place so you may have to put some real muscle behind it to get the pipe to loosen. With enough muscle, you will be able to take a remove the defective piece of pipe.

It may be a good idea to take this with you to the store to make sure that you are getting the right piece of replacement pipe. The person at the store will be able to help you to get the correct piece and will save you the headache of trying to figure things out on your own. Once you get back home with your new pipe, it will be a simple matter of doing everything in reverse and putting the new piece back in place. Make sure that you coat the threads of the pipe with plumber’s tape as this is an area where a lot of leaks still seem to come from most of the time.

Fixing a leaking pipe on your own will be a very money and time saving part of owning a home. There is one thing that is a fact with this, if a plumber has to do it, they will charge a lot more than the few dollars you were out to buy the supplies to replace the pipe. Also, there is the time factor as this is not a priority problem, a lot of plumbers will put it at the bottom of their list to get to.

If nothing else, it gives you a sense of accomplishment that you managed to do this all on your own without any assistance.
